This weekend is the Desert City Classic Competition. It is 3 days of workouts for Teams of 3 and Individuals. We have 12 total athletes competing in this competition this weekend.
I am one of them. I have the privilege of being on the team “Not Fast, Just Furious” with Jesse Green and Tatjana Sulaver.
As the competition gets closer I have found myself asking Why?. Why did I sign up to do this?
I am excited and nervous at the same time. I know that it will be fun. I will challenge myself. I get to be a part of an amazing team. I get to represent WildFire CrossFit. I get to cheer on our fellow athletes.
I know that I need to focus on all the benefits that will come out of competing this weekend and I wanted to share these with all of you as well.
Consider these mental and physical benefits to competition, whether it is with yourself in class or in an event that you decide to do.
You might find yourself excited to jump into competition even more.
At WildFire CrossFit, competition is not just about stepping onto a stage or reaching for a medal. Whether it’s a local competition, like the one happening this weekend, or a daily workout at the gym, competition can be a powerful tool for mental and physical growth. Here’s why embracing competition can be transformative.
Mental Benefits of Competition
- Enhanced Focus and Mental Resilience Competition brings intensity and a level of focus that is hard to replicate. As athletes push their limits, they learn to stay present, drown out distractions, and become more aware of their capabilities. This mental discipline is invaluable both in and out of the gym, helping us handle stress, focus better, and achieve more in everyday life.
- Building Confidence Nothing boosts self-belief quite like facing a challenge and overcoming it. This happens everyday in class. Each workout or competition tests your mental and physical limits, and each success—no matter how small—reinforces your belief in your abilities. Even moments of struggle or setbacks offer growth; when you push through learning a new skill or discovering new strength, you prove to yourself just how resilient you are.
- Connection and Camaraderie CrossFit competitions, especially local ones, are a unique experience in building community. When our athletes compete this weekend, they’re not just competing for themselves—they’re also representing WildFire CrossFit. This shared experience fosters strong bonds and a sense of unity that lifts up everyone in our community, inspiring others to try something new or challenge themselves further. We know that our whole community is cheering us on and that means a lot.
Physical Benefits of Competition
- Elevated Performance and Skill Growth The intensity of competition naturally drives athletes to perform at a higher level, pushing their physical boundaries. In a competition, you might lift heavier, move faster, or hit a level of precision that was previously just out of reach. This elevated intensity leads to skill growth, which helps athletes break through plateaus and achieve new milestones.
- Improved Adaptability and Recovery Competitions often throw curveballs—unexpected movements, combinations, or rep schemes—which require quick thinking and adaptability. Learning to handle these challenges helps athletes develop a more flexible approach to workouts, making it easier to handle any workout WildFire throws at you. Plus, the recovery process after a competition trains your body to bounce back faster and stronger, making regular workouts feel more manageable.
- Sense of Achievement and Motivation Nothing matches the pride of completing a challenging competition. The effort and dedication put into preparation, paired with the satisfaction of giving your all, create a sense of achievement that carries over into other areas of life. For those who aren’t competing yet, witnessing their fellow WildFire athletes achieve their goals is a huge motivator, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, set higher goals, and even consider signing up for the next local event.
Embrace Competition at Every Level
You don’t need to be a seasoned athlete to experience the benefits of competition. Every time you push a little harder in a workout, go for a new PR, or focus on improving your form, you’re engaging in a competition with yourself. This journey of self-improvement is just as valuable as any event.
See you in class and at the next competition!
