2012 CrossFit Games Flashback

Being at the Phoenix Open yesterday brought back memories of the CrossFit Games in 2012, mainly because we were watching a sporting event while sitting outside in the rain. While the action at Waste Management Open only held our attention until the rain really started to come down, in 2012 at the CrossFit Games, no amount of rain could have kept us away from watching athletes like Matt Chan, Julie Foucher, Scott Panchik, and of course, Rich Froning, who are now considered legends in the CrossFit Community.

On this rainy morning at the Games, there were 2 events held back to back with a short rest between each. The first was the Ball Toss, where athletes had to throw 4-pound Medicine Balls for distance using the GHD as a catapult. Then, they lined up on the track to begin the Track Triplet, which was 3 Rounds of 8 Split Snatch, 7 Bar Muscle Ups, and a 400M Run.

It was the first time I had seen the Split Snatch in an event, and I can’t remember seeing it since. This exercise requires a greater degree of agility and coordination. What also made this exercise challenging was that athletes had to alternate legs with each rep. Just like in a pistol or a lunge, athletes had to complete a good rep on their right leg before performing another rep with their left.

While the best in the world made this one look easy, it made things difficult for some of the athletes who were further down the leaderboard.

The Split Jerk is common and a favorite of many athletes for getting the most amount of weight overhead as possible. While we don’t see the Split Snatch as much, it is a great exercise to help athletes get under the bar faster. In fact, for those athletes who have trouble getting below parallel in the overhead squat or have mobility issues making it challenging to get below parallel, the Split Snatch may be just what the Coach ordered to get the bar overhead.

The Strength today is Front Rack Lunges, so you will have plenty of work to get you warmed up for the WOD. It’s always fun to be able to do workouts we see in the CrossFit Games, so strap in and enjoy it and check out this replay of the final heat back in 2012!

Oh, and in case you were wondering why we used the first WildFire Workout photo, we launched just 2 months later.
