2 is Better than 1

 

This year we get 2 CrossFit Games Opens!  That’s right the Open is here again this year.  With CrossFit moving the season for the CrossFit Games the Open will begin October 10th (that’s when the first workout gets announced for week 1).  Five weeks of fun and challenging workouts and we had SO MUCH FUN with our team competition in March that we are up for a RE-MATCH!!

 

So what is the OPEN?

 

The qualifier to the CrossFit games is OPEN to everyone around the world.  Each week ONE workout will get announced on Thursday and everyone who is participating in THE OPEN must complete the announced workout with a judge or send in a video to ensure proper completion and standards on each movement by 5pm the following Monday. After 5 weeks the top athletes in each country get invitations to compete at the CrossFit Games in 2020. 

 

For those of us who have no desire to go to the games or aren’t quite there yet in being able to make it, WE do the OPEN to:

 

  • Challenge ourselves
  • Connect with the greater CrossFit Community
  • Bond even more with our WildFire Community
  • Do things we never thought we could do
  • Be a part of a team (for some of us we haven’t ever experience being in a team sport or if we have it has been a bit of time since)
  • HAVE FUN!!  Laugh, sweat, cry, cheer, and more.

 

So in that case, who should participate?

EVERYONE! There is an Rx and a Scaled division, AND we can always scale the scale as needed to still be a challenge and allow you to participate. Each week you can choose which standards you are going to follow based on your fitness and skill level and coach recommendations. The scaled division is something everyone can participate in and while it may not get you a ticket to the CrossFit Games, it will give you the opportunity to see where you are as an athlete and have a lot of fun doing it!

 

Why should you participate in The Open this year maybe even again?

 

Teamwork and Community – there’s just something about competition that brings everyone together. When you have people cheering you on and you are there to cheer them on, there’s just a tighter bond that forms that you will talk about for years to come. We have great memories that go all the way back to the very first Open back in 2011. We have a unique advantage this year that the open happens 2x this year. That we can test our fitness on how much we have improved in both skills and strength and conditioning from the Spring.  Normally a whole year goes by, the holidays come, and we may or may not have stayed as consistent with our fitness as we wanted to.  Here we have the open right before the holidays are upon us.  What a great opportunity to stay consistent, stay motivated and kick start our fitness.

Competition – Good, healthy, fun competition brings out the best in athletes. You have something to work for. You train harder, and you push yourself to get the best results possible. Whether you are doing the Open just for fun or you have goals of reaching the CrossFit Games, once the clock starts, you will push yourself harder and surprise yourself.

FUN – If it’s not fun, why do it. And at WildFire, we make it a lot of FUN! In addition to the actual Open, we are going to keep our Teams from the spring and do a RE-MATCH for bragging rights at the gym. We compete for a whole lot more than the best score. Teams will earn points for things like wearing their teams’ colors, getting a PR in a workout, cheering people on, and showing team spirit. You have all seen the Team poster from the Spring Open competition in the gym, The RED team brought it week after week and now let’s see who can give them a run for their money!!  GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE???

How do we participate:

Option 1, and quite frankly, the option that makes the Open so much FUN and totally worth doing: Athletes can complete the workouts by coming into one of the specific times we have set up from Friday to Monday when a certified judge will be available to count your reps and validate your score. Main event is Saturday at 10am so plan on that for all 5 weeks if you can!


Option 2
, as long as you have the required equipment, a camera, and a space to complete the workouts, you can do the workouts on your own and submit your video when you enter your score. The video submission standards will be explained when the workouts are announced. Take a look at past standards HERE. If you are doing this workout in front of a camera instead of a judge, just be sure to have everything ready. Just 1 little issue and your video could be declared invalid no matter what your score is.

 

Here’s how we do The Open at WildFire CrossFit…

As I said earlier, the whole WildFire community gets involved every year and make this event a lot of fun and something you are not going to want to miss. While there will be other times available to help accommodate everyone’s schedule, the main event will be every Saturday at 10am. We will have a sign up available so we know who will be participating and when. We will organize each athlete into heats based on the space, equipment, and judges we have available. Every athlete will have their own judge who is certified to uphold the standards CrossFit HQ has provided.

Athletes are responsible for submitting their own scores into the online Open system. We will have computers set up in the gym for score submission, as it’s always best to get it in right away.

If you aren’t able to make it to Saturday’s main event, we will have other times available to perform the Open workouts. Sunday will be another time when many athletes participate. Other times will be available on Friday and Monday so that everyone has the opportunity to participate OR re-do the workout for a chance to get a better score. We will not be doing the workouts during class. If you must do the workout at a different time, let us know and we will make it happen.  

Each athlete will be allowed to re-do each workout once with a judge that we provide if it is at a designated time. If you want to re-do the workout for a 2nd or 3rd time you will need to organize your own judge. Rarely have we seen someone who does the workout for a 3rd or 4th time get a significantly better score in the 5 days we have to complete the workouts.

Entry Fee:

It will cost a total of $50 to participate in The Open this year at WildFire CrossFit. $20 is to register for The Open through CrossFit HQ so you are able to submit your scores, update your profile, and track your progress on the leaderboard, not only this year, but in upcoming years as well. CrossFit puts a lot of time effort and energy into this event. It’s because of them that we can hold this event and bring our community closer together.

The other $30 will go to WildFire. We put a lot of time, effort, and energy into making this an incredible 5-weeks for everyone. Coaches are available for a lot more hours during this time, not only to help judge, but also to help athletes work on skills, answer questions, and get them ready for the competition. For those of you who have participated in the past, you know the amount of extra work that goes into this event every year. Anything left over beyond this will go towards getting new equipment for the gym.

If you would like to help judge (we always need help with judges), you will need to complete the Online Judges Course through the games.crossfit.com site. Once you have completed your course, send tiffanyg@wildfirecrossfit.com and she will waive your entry fee and get you registered.
