WHY Bother Doing the Olympic Lifts?
Olympic Weightlifting consists of the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. The snatch is a movement where a barbell is moved from the ground into a locked out overhead position in one fluid motion. In the clean & jerk, a barbell is moved from the ground into the rack position followed by a dip and drive upwards to move it into a locked out overhead position. These are technical lifts that take time and dedication to do properly. While they are indeed challenging, the good news is anyone can do it and the benefits are huge.
In CrossFit there are ten fitness “domains” that we train. They are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Guess what? The Olympic lifts train all ten of these domains! It takes incredible strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy to properly perform either of the Olympic lifts. Additionally, a bunch of heavy sets or a particularly meaty complex will test endurance to the limit. When done correctly, the snatch and clean & jerk utilize nearly every muscle in the body to generate more power than any other singular movement. It is no wonder so many athletes and coaches from a variety of sports incorporate these lifts into their training routine.
At WildFire CrossFit, our specialty class offerings include the WildFire Olympic Weightlifting Club. Currently, the club trains Tuesday nights at 7pm and Saturday mornings at 11:15 am. Training typically consists of work in one or both of the primary lifts, some strength based or accessory training, and core exercises. Lifters of all levels are welcome and we want to coach you whether you are just beginning, already familiar and looking to improve, or an aspiring/current competitor. For those of you looking for even more individualized attention, contact a coach to arrange personal training! If competing is the goal, talk to us about setting up a personalized training program.
If you have never attended the WildFire Weightlifting Club before, it is a prerequisite that you attend a WildFire Weightlifting Skills Clinic first. These clinics are currently offered on the third Saturday of every month at 11:15. The clinic is a chance for your mobility and general knowledge of the lifts to be evaluated by a coach. We go through the lifts from a very basic level in order to prepare you to train independently and safely with the club.
So, what are you waiting for? Come join us and train with the WildFire Weightlifting Club!
