The 4th annual Fire & Ice Challenge is in the books and it was an AWESOME event!

On Saturday, over 160 CrossFit Athletes from Affiliates, all over the state of Arizona, converged at WildFire CrossFit, in North Central Phoenix, for the 4th Annual Fire & Ice Challenge.

The weather was perfect for late May in Arizona. By 7am athletes were beginning to arrive and as the tents were going up out front, athletes started to stream into the gym to check their teams in for the event.

Teams consisted of 2 Men & 2 Women who competed in either the Rx or the Scaled Division.

Gypsy Cup Coffee arrived early to serve athletes and spectators their morning coffee. By 8 am the front parking lot was covered in tents, coolers, supplements, fitness gear, and the fittest group of people South of Salt Lake City, where the CrossFit Games South Regional event is being held.

At 8:25am, the call went out that the Athlete Briefing would begin in 5 minutes, which began the mass exodus of the parking lot as every participating athlete and spectators squeezed into the gym to get all the details on the days events.

Coaches Chris Kern (the M.C.) and Chris Stasik (Head Judge), began explaining the 3 Events and 1 Floater workout that these Teams would be facing in the day ahead.

Event #1: “Meet at the Bar” -  Teams had 16 Minutes to complete as many rounds as possible of:

Event #1: "Meet me at the Bar"
16 Min AMRAP
RX Division Scaled Division
50 Wall Balls (25/20) 50 Wall Balls (20/14)
3 Bar Muscle Ups 9 Pull Ups
50 Burpees Over the Bar 50 Burpees
2 Bar Muscle Ups 6 Pull Ups
50 Snatches (95/65) 50 Snatches (65/35)
1 Bar Muscle Up 3 Pull Ups

This type of workout is a staple of the Fire & Ice Challenge as athletes could go through this workout in any order they chose, they just had to stay in that order throughout the workout. Teams were required to strategize which order gave them the opportunity to work through these exercises the fastest. Each Team member was required to complete at least 1 rep before tagging in their next teammate, which led to additional strategy around the more skill-based exercises like the Bar Muscle Ups for the Rx Division or the Pull Ups for the Scaled Division.

This was a burner, and with the ability to tag in and out, Teams were churning through their reps.

4 225/155 155/85
2 245/165 185/95
Max 275/185 225/135

Event #2 was a Clean & Jerk Ladder where athletes had 10 Minutes to complete as many reps as possible at as much weight as possible.

For this event the 2 Female Team Members paired up and the 2 Male Team Members Paired up. The Women went first and had to complete their 10 reps at the prescribed weight before the Men completed their 10 reps. The 2 Female Team Members could trade off as much or as little as they wanted, they just had to complete the required reps at the prescribed weight before passing it back to the 2 Male Team Members.

This is how they went through the entire ladder. Each pair must complete the required reps at the prescribed weight before passing it back to the other pair.

Once the last set of 2 Reps was completed by both pairs, the tie-break time was recorded, and athletes had the remaining time to complete as many reps as possible at 275 lbs. for the Males and 185 lbs. for the Females in the Rx Division and 225 lbs. for the Males and 135 lbs. for the Females in the Scaled Division.

Team Members Complete Entire Workout Relay Style
Max Doubles for Rx & Singles for Scaled in time remaining

Event #3: “4 x 4” was a relay style event. Each Team Member had to go through the workout in its entirety before the next athletes could begin. The goal was to get through the workout as fast as possible.

The kicker with this event was the Max Double Unders (Singles for the Scaled Division) each team would complete in the time remaining under the cap.

Since the Max Jump Rope counted as a separate event and an additional chance to earn points, there was a strategy to the order Team Members completed the event to get their athletes with the best jump rope skills in the best position to rack up some reps.

And rack up reps they did indeed! Athletes got their revenge on the judges in this one as counting 8+ minutes of doubles unders will make even the best judge see double.

By the end of event 3, the Fire & Ice Challenge was running on time. We had 2 Food Trucks, Local Lunch Box and the International Truck of Tacos come and serve up some incredible lunch specials to athletes between events. They could also catch the action from the European, East, & South CrossFit Games Regional Events.

We are proud to have the Fire & Ice Challenge known for being an event that is FUN, judged fairly, and runs on time. It takes a lot of people to make that happen. We are so lucky to have so many of the Coaches & Members of WildFire CrossFit step up to help out for this event!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

And while we are on the subject of Thank Yous, Thank You to all of our sponsors who participated in the 2018 Fire & Ice Challenge. We appreciate the support of some incredible companies including: Total Lifestyle Chiropractic (TLC), Massage Therapist and Mobility Extraordinaire: Don Wong, Salad & Go, Ascent Protein, Fit Aid, Rx Bar, and Caffeine & Kilos are some of our top sponsors.

The Floater – Most of the events at the Fire & Ice Challenge are done in “Heats”, where 5-8 Teams will be on the floor at the same time, each with their own judge. The M.C. will countdown to “Go” and all the Teams in that Heat will begin the workout at the same time.

For the Floater, Teams were required to schedule their time to complete the workout sometime throughout the day.

The Floater at the 2018 Fire & Ice Challenge was burner. In this workout, Teams had 2 minutes to complete as many Dumbbell Thrusters as possible at 50 lbs. for Males & 35 lbs. for Females in the Rx Division and 35 lbs. for Males and 20 lbs. for Females in the Scaled Division. The 2 Males could switch off as often as they liked as could the Females.

This made for a very fast Floater workout with a lot of reps.

The Floater was also the tie-breaker and in this year’s Fire & Ice Challenge, we did need to use the Floater to determine who would compete in the Final Event.

The Floater Top 3 – Rx Division:

1-There was a tie for 1st as the EVCF Tigers from East Valley CrossFit in Chandler and Chalk Dirty To Me from Litchfield Park CrossFit in Litchfield Park both with 128 Reps

2-Team Team from Sol CrossFit in Phoenix with 125 Reps

The Floater Top 3 – Scaled Division:

1-The Box from The Box in Florence with 141 Reps

2-Ask Me About My Hammer from CrossFit Uru in Phoenix with 136 Reps

3-Fries with Guys from Laveen CrossFit in Laveen with 132 Reps

Once all 3 Events and the Floater workout were complete, the stage was set for the Final Event. So far, the athletes knew what to expect. Teams were given access to the workouts weeks in advance, so they could practice and strategize a game plan to get through it as fast or with as many reps as possible.

The Final Event remained a secret until we knew which 4 Teams would be competing. Since this was the 4th annual Fire & Ice Challenge, we decided to incorporate some significance into the rep scheme.

Finals Top 4 Workout
 For Time in Male/Female Pairs:
RX Division Scaled Division
40 Calorie Row 40 Calorie Row
40 DB Goblet Squats 70/50 40 DB Goblet Squats 50/35
40 Handstand Push Ups 40 Hand Release Push Ups
40 KB Swings 70/53 40 KB Swings 53/35
10 Full Team Synchro Burpees 10 Full Team Synchro Burpees

Working in Male/Female Pairs, the first pair had to complete all the reps of the exercise before the next pair could begin. For example, once the first Male/Female pair completed all 40 Calories on the rower, they could move on to the DB Goblet Squats with the next Male/Female pair began the Row.

Each Pair had to stay together, and they could not pass the first pair at any point. Once both Male/Female pairs completed all the work, their time was recorded.

While there are many different scoring formats for competition, The final workout for the Fire & Ice Challenge was scored as just another event in the competition.

Top 4 going to the Finals – Rx Division:

1-EVCF Tigers from East Valley CrossFit with 8 Points

2-Eggplants from CrossFit Now with 17 points

3-Team Team from Sol CrossFit with 19 points

4-Aggressively Average from CrossFit Veer with 24 points

Top 4 going to the Finals – Scaled Division:

1-Ask Me About My Hammer from CrossFit Uru with 12 points

2-The Box from The Box with 15 points

3-Fries with Guys from Laveen CrossFit with 23 Points

4-Flexicutioners from CrossFit Unwavering & CrossFit Spade with 28 points

Since the scoring is based off the place they finished in the event, the Team with the least amount of points is the winner.

Once all the smoke had cleared and the dust settled, the Rx Division had a clear winner as the top Team finished either 1st or 2nd in each of the 6 Events while the Scaled Division winner scraped by with only a 1-point advantage over the 2nd place team.

Final Results – Rx Division:

1-EVCF Tigers – Maria Devlin, Evan Booth, Kyle Weeks, Naomi Barton

2-Eggplants – Stephen Ledoux, Jessice Brooks, Athena Olmstead, Matthew Burroughs

3-Team Team – Neil Moran, Ashley Bean, Justin Brooks, Brittany Krohn

Final Results – Scaled Division:

1-Ask Me About My Hammer – Brian Cook, Brandon Laurence, Lisa Gutierrez, Hannah McMasters

2-The Box – Chris Montiel, Jose Loya, Erica Carroen, Eva Rodriguez
